The phrase “we are to be set apart” means that believers are called to live differently from the world — to be holy, dedicated to God, and distinct in behavior, values, and purpose.

In the Bible, being set apart is often expressed with the word holy (from the Hebrew qadosh and Greek hagios), which literally means separated or consecrated.

Here are a few key verses that show this idea:
Leviticus 20:26 (ESV) — “You shall be holy to me, for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine.”

Romans 12:2 (NIV) — “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

1 Peter 2:9 (ESV) — “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

So, to be set apart means: Belonging to God and not to the world. Living by God’s Word and Spirit rather than worldly desires.

Reflecting God’s character — love, purity, truth, and mercy — in how we live.
"we are to be set apart"—that's the heartbeat of God's design for His people, a divine distinction that marks us as His in a world that often pulls the other way. It's not about earning favor but responding to it, living as lights that point back to the Source. Let's lean into this a bit more, building on our chat.
The Call to Holiness: Why and How
Scripture frames "set apart" (qadosh in Hebrew, hagios in Greek) as both a status (what God declares us to be) and a process (how we live it out). It's rooted in His own holiness—He invites us into His purity, not to shame our flaws, but to free us from them.

The Foundation: Exodus 19:5–6 sets the stage: "Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples... and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." God "sets apart" Israel at Sinai, not for isolation, but for mediation—priests bridging heaven and earth.

Fast-forward: This explodes into the church in 1 Peter 2:9, making us that royal priesthood, set apart to "proclaim the excellencies" of Christ.

Yeshua Messiah  Model: In John 17:14–19, He prays for us: "I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world...

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. For their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth." Jesus sets Himself apart first—His obedience on the cross sanctifies us.

We're in the world but not of it, flavored with salt and glowing like cities on hills (Matthew 5:13–16).
The Daily Grind: 2 Corinthians 6:17 amps it up: "'Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them,' says the Lord

." But "separate" isn't withdrawal; it's wisdom in engagement—rejecting idols (anything we worship over God) while loving neighbors fiercely. Think: Integrity in a spin-cycle culture, generosity amid greed, forgiveness in grudges.

Living It Out (No Fluff)
Mindset Shift: Start each day claiming it—Psalm 4:3: "But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself." It's identity, not effort alone.

Practical Steps: Immerse in the Word (John 17:17), surround with like-minded folks (Hebrews 10:24–25), and let the Spirit convict gently (Romans 8:13). When temptations hit, remember: You're not ordinary; you're His.

The Promise: This sets us free—from fear of man, chains of sin, the pressure to conform. It leads to fruit that endures, echoing back to Matthew 7: true "knowing" flows from lives set apart in love.

Every time you look up and see the blue sky you are to remember to do the commandments and follow all Yehovah's instructions, as found in His Torah. For this is everyone’s purpose for our lives, your duty. Ecclesiastes 12:13
